About the Legal Aid Committee:

Pykälä’s Legal Aid Committee provides free legal advice as a member service of HYY to HYY members, organizations under HYY, and students of the University of the Arts Helsinki. We offer legal advice in person, by phone, and via email. All consultations are completely confidential.

The Legal Aid Committee is available during the University of Helsinki’s semesters on Mondays and Thursdays (excluding public holidays) from 17:00 to 19:00 at Pykälä’s office, located at Mannerheimintie 3B, 5th floor. During summer (June–August), the committee operates every other Wednesday. Information about exceptions and holiday schedules is published in the website’s news section.

We assist eligible clients with all legal matters. However, we do not:

  • Provide assistance with tax matters
  • Represent clients before authorities, courts, or other institutions
  • Draft documents. However, we provide guidance on drafting documents and review completed documents.

Need Legal Aid? – Follow These Steps:

  • Contact the Legal Aid Committee by visiting during service hours, calling the service number, or sending an email.
    • Clients visiting in person are required to prove their eligibility for free legal aid by showing a student card or equivalent proof of student status.
    • If contacting us via email, please use the university-provided email address (helsinki.fi / uniarts.fi).
    • If the building’s door is locked, call the service number, and we will come to open the door.
  • Describe your situation comprehensively – start from the beginning, explaining what happened, who is involved, and what your interests are in the matter.
    • All information and documents you provide will be handled with complete confidentiality.
    • If you have relevant documents, please bring them to the service hours or send them as email attachments.
  • If additional information is needed, we will contact you via phone or email, as it may be difficult to provide advice based on incomplete information.
  • The advice we provide is reviewed in meetings of a supervisory board composed of experienced lawyers, held approximately every three weeks. If necessary, we will correct or supplement our initial responses.
